History

Ukrainian settlement in the Prud’homme area began in 1904. Until the 1940s, local Ukrainians worshipped at the surrounding rural parishes of Borshchiv to the southwest, Havryliuk to the east, and Bodnari to the north.

The Church of St. John the Theologian was built in 1945 and blessed a decade later by Bishop Andrew Roborecki. In 1951, it was decorated by Theodore Baran, and it retains this beautiful interior to the present day. The church sits on a hill at the edge of the village and is lovingly cared for by its devoted congregation. Divine Liturgy is celebrated regularly throughout the year.

The parish of St. John the Theologian in Prud’homme is cared for by Dormition of the Mother of God Parish in Saskatoon.

The information presented here is drawn in part from the work of Anna Maria Kowcz-Baran, Ukrainian Catholic Churches of Saskatchewan, published in 1977. This monumental historical survey is available for purchase at the Musée Ukraina Museum for $20.00.
