The history of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Wynyard begins in 1937 with the purchase of a former Lutheran church. As Ukrainians from the surrounding countryside moved into town, the local community continued to grow. By 1953, the expanding parish recognized the need for a larger church, and plans were made to build a new structure.
Construction was completed in 1954, and shortly thereafter the interior was beautifully decorated by Theodore Baran of Saskatoon. Sacred Heart Church in Wynyard was formally blessed in 1961 by Bishop Andrew Roborecki.
For many years, the parish was served by the Redemptorist Fathers from Yorkton. In 1965, a rectory was built in Wynyard, allowing the Redemptorists to reside in the community. They continued their pastoral service in the district until their withdrawal in 2008. Since that time, Sacred Heart and the surrounding parishes have been served by priests of the Eparchy of Saskatoon.
Sacred Heart Church serves as the seat of the Wynyard district, with affiliated parishes located in Foam Lake, Wishart, Humboldt, Holar, Krasne, and Kuroki. In addition, priests from the district serve several other mission parishes, including Beckenham, Bedfordville, Fenwood, Goodeve Farms, Lanigan Farms, Model Farm, Parkerview, Sheho Farms, and Wishart Farms.
